**adoption pending**When I first picked Cooper up he was described as depressed and really scared, and when I got him he was definitely terrified. He didn't want to come out of his crate and displayed fear aggression trying to protect himself. But within the first few days he showed almost miraculous improvement. I would now describe him as a happy, playful, wonderful, loving dog that adores his person more than anything, but doesn’t really care to know anyone else unless he’s allowed to meet them on his own terms.
Cooper loves snuggling with his person, basking in the sun as it filters in through the windows, and wants nothing more than having his head/crest petted. He follows his person around wherever they go, content to do whatever they’re doing. He’s the ultimate snuggle buddy, and that includes in bed – he loves sleeping right next to his person. Because he’s so devoted, he has a tendency to be protective, especially when new people are coming into the house. He does not want to be touched by other people until he comes to them (and can growl and possibly snap to show his displeasure), so for this reason, he should not be around children at all. Cooper loves a romp around the house with a stuffed toy, Nylabone or ball, but he does not want to share his toys while he’s playing and will growl and possibly snap to protect them. He loves tossing a stuffed toy up into the air and then chasing it around – he’s full of spunk and hilarious to watch while he’s playing.
Since in foster care, Cooper has been working on his leash manners and always does his #2 outside when out on his morning and evening walks. He gets upset when walking while passing another dog or a human jogger, but is quick to calm once they pass. He has a tendency to mark inside if allowed to roam around on his own, so it’s best to keep him on a routine potty schedule. Although he doesn’t love it and would much rather be with his person, he does well in a crate and should not soil it.
Cooper’s ideal home would be with someone with significant dog behavior experience that understands fear aggression and physical cues. He would thrive with one person or an adult couple (no children) in a calm home without a lot of visitors coming and going. Cooper currently lives with other dogs (a French Bulldog and a powder puff Chinese Crested) and has never had an issue with either. Although he doesn’t attempt to play with them (he prefers snuggling with his human), he peacefully coexists.
Cooper probably does not require a fenced yard, but if he’s let outside without a fence he should always be on a leash, because he’s quick and curious.
