Maribel
LUCY & Maribel:
Back in August of 2015 I was at a friends house and we decided to look up Chinese Cresteds on the internet. They have always caught my eye for some reason so I decided to check them out, I had to put my Jack Russell (Ripley) down in March of 2015 and wasn't really looking to get a dog at that time , My heart was still broke and didn't know if I wanted to set myself up for another heart break. I decided to check them out anyways and see what they say about the breed. We read a few articles about Chinese crested and decided to check out a few rescue sites. I found Naked K9's website and proceeded to check out their available dogs. It was then that I fell in love with Lucy. The minute I saw her picture I knew she was ment to be with me. It was love at first sight. I proceeded to check out the rest of the dogs but my heart kept going back to Lucy. I couldn't get her out of my mind. I didn't sleep that night because I couldn't quit thinking about her. The next day is when I decide that I had to try to adopt her. I filled the application out and went through the process of adopting her. I felt like I won a million bucks when they notified me that she was mine. My eyes filled with tears and my heart with love. Little did I know the only way to heal my broken heart was to give it something to love again. Lucy did that for me. She was being fostered in Alabama so I asked my sister if she was up for a road trip and lucky for me she was. We picked Lucy up at the end of August and brought her back to Michigan. She was a complete angel the whole way back. I got her home and it has felt like she was ment to be here the whole time. She adjusted very well and my journey with Chinese crested's began. I was amazed at how soft and loving she was. She just jumped in my lap and layed her head on my chest and I could just feel my heart melting. I was hooked. A month went by and everything was going well but I could tell that Lucy was lonely when I left her alone so I decided to check into maybe getting her a buddy. That's when I came across Maribel. I went back to Naked K9's website because I was impressed with how they handled Lucy's adoption and I trusted them, it was there that I saw Maribel's picture. Maribel wasn't even officially on their website yet. There was just her picture saying " coming soon " again it was love at first sight so I inquired about her. They thought that she would be a great match so I went throught the process of adopting her. Maribel was being fosterd in Texas but Naked K9 was gracious enough to get her to Indiana for me. Maribel was a little more cautious at first not as trusting as Lucy was but everyday she trusted me a little bit more and by the end of the week ypu could tell that she new she was home. Lucy and Maribel have gotten along from the beginning. It's almost like they were sisters. They are either sitting on each other or laying next to each other. They are perfect for each other and for me. Maribel has come so far from what her Foster mom Becky told me about her. She makes me play with her every day and is constantly by my side. Lucy and Maribel are the most loving dogs that I have ever had and from what I understand most Chinese Crested's are the same way. Im hooked on my hairless babies and the three of us are so thankful to Naked K9 and the people that foster their dogs. Lucy and I would like to say a special thank you to her foster mom Renee for giving Lucy a safe home until I could find her. We are forever grateful to you. Maribel and I would like to thank her foster mom Becky for also giving Maribel a safe and loving home. We are forever grateful to you. I don't even want to think what would have happened to these guys had you two women not been there to give them a home. Becky and Renee and all the people that work at Naked K9 are truly angels that walk on earth and the earth is a much better place because of you guys. THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH for all that you do. Dougie
Naked K9 alumna, Julie, gets a brother!
We decided to add a new member to our family. Lillie's health was starting to fail and we thought Julie needed a younger sibling to play with, and I wanted a puff boy. So I decided to see who was up for adoption at nakedk9. When I saw Dougie I thought he was perfect. I left his picture and info saying I found him, Neil agreed. I asked Sue, Julie's foster mom if she knew Dougie. She gave me Janette's name. Janette and I talked and I put in my application for this handsome boy. I met Janette at a pet smart halfway between where we lived. When I saw Dougie I thought he was even more gorgeous than in pictures. Took him home and Julie and Dougie hit it off right away. Julie is crazy about him. Dougie fit into our family like he always had been with us. He is extremely playful and a real snuggler. I love watching him run around the house with a toy in his mouth. Dougie loves running and chasing cats and squirrels. Dougie got a little brother rescued from a shelter in Oklahoma. Petey is half Dougie's size and they wrestle all the time, Dougie is very gentle with Petey, very fun to watch.
Janette had told me that every night before bed she would sing the Dougie sleeps tonight. I have done that every night since he joined our family. We love Dougie and are so happy he is with us. Thank you Janette and nakedk9.
Xena
After the death of Bailey, our Jack Russell and watching the sadness of Jack, our 9 year old rescue dog, I knew that I needed to seriously look for a new family companion. On January 18, 2016 Cecilia from Naked K9 Rescue Group knocked on my door. Xena, a shy but feisty Xolo entered our home. After about a 2 hour visit, Xena decided to stay with us as her forever home! She likes to chew shoes and decided the first week that her target was to see how many times she could nip at my husband's heels and frantically bark "I am the boss now!" Xena believes she is my defender. Jack immediately came out of his "coma of mourning". I have found strategic toys are a must to chew, chew and chew. I am adjusting my next months budget for dog toys. A quick squirt from a squirt bottle and positive reinforcement with treats have helped Xena and Dad become friends slowly.
The best way to explain what I have been witnessing for the last month is a Zubal dog exercise zone which begins at approximately 6:00 am. After eating breakfast, Xena and Jack start out with tug of war, followed by a Mexican standoff! Xena tends to end the stand off by running off with the desired toy and the chase begins. Xena loves music and it seems to intensify the parallel zooms I have become accustomed to laughing at as Xena and Jack fly through their antics. Since Xena has moved in, she has weathered two big snow storms. This California Xolo has adjusted well to snow on her feet. She does her "duty" in record time and has learned leash commands pretty well- a work in progress. She is two and had not really been socialized before joining our family except with her foster mom, Cecelia. She knows the vocabulary, "eat", "sit"-treats definitely help, "get in your bed", "stay" and "walk". We are working on the command QUIET.
She has progressed traveling in my Jeep -initially plastering her body against the front passenger seat to now riding with her body in a sitting position in her fancy new car seat that Jack can also fits into. We are still working on Jeep rides, very short with the window cracked open, lavender oil on her car seat blanket" and soft music playing. My reassuring words seems to calm her too! I am seriously working on this with her because summer travel, kayaking, and swimming at the lake are in Xena's future.
Xena has won the hearts of a number of my immediate family members especially my grand daughter who created a song she sings to Xena. Most of us are dog lovers, but we have all learned caution is important. Xena's crate, in our bedroom, is a safe haven where she seems to enjoy a daily nap and her nightly slumber. I can't believe she sleeps ALL night long since she came to our home.
Every day Xena looks at me with her brown eyes peering out of her black mask to say, "I love you and trust you most of the time"! I am learning that as a rescue dog, Xena needs MUCH love, patience and the slow introduction of new people and experiences. I smile as I watch this "mountain goat" Xolo climb on the back of our couch to smell my husband's bald head, lick his face and cautiously learn that it is ok to be held by dad. My quiet time with Xena is special with her favorite pink blanket covering her and my lap. Jack on one side of my lap and Xena on the other. Out from under the covers with her one black ear pointed straight up like an antenna and the tilt of her soft head, her eyes say..."I love you mom!" More from Xena soon. Bath in the utility sink with soap should be interesting.
I enjoyed writing this for your group. It brings into perspective how much I love this dog and how many adventures we have ahead together.
RoseBud
Rosie came to live with my daughter and I in Dec. 2014. We had been looking for a new addition to our family and her sweet face and story caught my eye immediately on PetFinder. There was no doubt that we were the family for her! Her transition with us was slow at first, as she was still very shy and timid. She had some trouble the first 6-9 months with her restroom routine as she found her favorite "spot" in the house. It took time, but she has conquered her fear of the backyard, especially on windy days, and hasn't had an accident indoors in quite some time. She had no problems befriending our Lab, who has now passed, and dwarf rabbit. Rosie spent hours watching the rabbit for her first few weeks with us. She is still pretty curious about him, but they live in harmony with each other. She started going up north to Grayling and Gladwin that first spring for long weekend vacations. That is when she really started to open up to us and other family members. She loves to walk the nature trails, ride on the pontoon boat, and watch deer and birds from a distance. Her favorite place to walk is Hartwick Pines. She will never pass up a ride in the car. She is an "on the go" kind of girl and loves adventure. She's become very protective and motherly to my daughter. She loves nothing more than snuggling up on the couch or under the blankets. She gives her unconditional love to us each day and is forever a part of our family. We love our Rosebud! â¡
Julie
Julie became part of our family three years ago this month. My husband and I had decided it was time to add to our family. We had lost our little girl Ariel, one of our three cresteds. As much as we missed Ariel we knew we had room in our hearts and our home for another baby. I looked on pet finder for Chinese Crested and it led me to Naked K9 & Small Dog Rescue. We looked at all the dogs up for adoption and as soon as we saw Julie's face we knew she was the one. We filled out an application for adoption. I got so excited when I heard my references were being checked. Then Sue, her foster Mom called me and we talked for awhile about Julie, Seamus and Lillie. So I was approved and was so happy. It was a very long 2 weeks until we met her. Sue drove in a huge snow storm and brought Julie to our house. Julie was so shy and scared. After Sue left her with us she hid. We kept hearing this high pitched noise which turned out to be Julie's whining. The next day my stepson brought his puppy and Julie was scared and jumped right in my lap and that was it, she trusted me and accepted me. She and I bonded. It took about 3 weeks to accept Neil, Julie does not like men.
As we got to know and love Julie, we found out how sweet, fun, loving and really smart she is. She settled into our family wonderfully. Seamus passed away that May and Julie and Lillie grew closer. When Lillie went blind Julie kept an eye on her. When we went to a cottage, Julie took care of Lillie making sure she didn't go near the cliffs, it was amazing to watch. New members have joined our family -Dougie and Petey, Julie is the boss. We love our Julie more than words can say. Thank you NakedK9 for bringing Julie into our life.
